That Burt Reynolds is so freaking awesome!

So now it’s two days after the Ultra marathon…that I didn’t do.

Last week I kept going back and forth on whether I should do it or drop down to the half marathon.  My rationale was that the course was moved due to the federal shutdown and the new trail was a lot more …trail-ier.  No… rugged is the word I was looking for.

Well the decision was made for me when I woke up Thursday morning puking in my bed.  I didn’t actually puke in my bed, I told RKY to grab the garbage can and he made it back in time for me to unload into it.

This continued all day long despite my diet of  only Gatorade.  My dehydration headache got terribly intense and I considered going to the ER for IV fluids, but I finally held down a popsicle and started to feel better.  I took two Benadryl and passed out until 8 the next morning.  When I got up, the headache was gone but my stomach felt awful.  I was able to drink and not spew everywhere, so that was an improvement, but I knew the 30 mile, half, and 10k were all no-go.

Luckily there was a 5k I had been eyeing that weekend.  It offered race day registration and didn’t start until 4 on Saturday, so I held out hope that I could do it.  Saturday morning I finally was able to eat, but only a little bit.  I spent the day at the pumpkin patch which was more than just a patch.  It was a little kid’s dream come true with slides, pony rides, and rubber duck races.  After the patch, I gobbled down some chili cheese corn chips and peanut butter, then got into my race clothes.

Sounds like a GREAT idea.  I decided to run in my Mizunos for the first time, which was scary because I am awfully superstitious about what shoes and clothes I wear.

I got to the race site, registered, and watched all the crazies come in.   it was a zombie run, not one where you are chased by zombies, but where you could dress like one.  I didn’t because I didn’t have time to prepare plus, I am allergic to face paint and love to make excuses.  About 200 people showed up, 98% in zombie garb.

I lined up in the front of the pack because most people didn’t look like they were going to be racing hard.  We started the race and a few zombie volunteers actually did lunge at us.  I wasn’t expecting that.  The race was an out and back with a couple turns.  It was very flat and it was very windy.  It felt like the wind was coming from both directions.  There was no clock on the course, so I was just running hard and hoping for the best.  We got to the turnaround and I was 1st female, 3rd overall.  The second half of the race was when the flu started to take it’s toll on me.  I felt really weak and a few times I was afraid I’d have to stop and walk the rest, but I never let up the pace.  I had pretty much 0 kick at the end, I was happy to see my sister waiting there though.  I waved at her and then noticed the clock right before I crossed the finish line.  I finished in 19:27.  WHAT?  That is a huge PR for me.  I had been trying to sub 20 at the beginning of the summer and was struggling, but now I knockout a 19:27?

I can make excuses as to why I got a 19:27… the course was short…the chip timing wasn’t accurate..but I checked the course’s map online and it was 3.1.  plus we had to run in the outside lane of the road.  And chip timing seems to be pretty accurate, plus the clock was spot on too.  I have no idea how I managed that time when the wind was so bad AND I had very little fuel in my body.  Maybe that’s the strategy I should rely on for 5ks.  Starve myself and sleep for two days prior.

I actually did stick around for the awards ceremony this time because my sister and bro-in-law were hanging in the bar at the finish.  I got interviewed for the paper and they actually published a blurb about how I was supposed to run an ultra but had the stomach flu.  EMBARRASSING.  My award was a tombstone.  Not even joking.  How cool is that?  It was really heavy though and I had to carry it all the way back to my car.  I put it in my back yard when I got home.

This race was a big confidence booster for me, but I still feel like I didn’t actually run that fast.  I will have to run another 5k soon and see how that goes.  Im guessing I will be above 20 again.  I am hoping to do a race this weekend, but I don’t like to plan ahead too far because I will probably get sick again or something.  There is an 8k that I did well at last year and a few 5ks that I could do.  We’ll see.
