the party’s over

I have realized that I need to accept the fact that I am really not that fast.  I mean, I know that I am not, but I am not getting any faster.  It was exciting to improve and start getting overall awards in smaller races, but I have stopped improving.  It has nothing to do with having a kid or any injury.  I have added speed work and still do not improve.  I have added rest days and still have not improved.  It’s just not in me.  Maybe I am suited for another sport.  Maybe I can blame my completely non-athletic parents.  I cant blame myself for not trying, because I certainly tried.  This fall I will focus on running races for fun again.  And running for fun.  Screw the speed work.  I can’t compete with 13 yr old freaks of nature and my highly competitive age group.

I don’t think this fall’s marathon will be my last and I am not going to bust myself up trying to PR.  I am going to try a duathlon and do more cycling.  If running is making me feel down on myself, then clearly I need to try something new.

D-d-d-d-donuts!

Well hello summer.  You’ve come a bit late and overstayed your welcome.  I am not counting on any stellar runs this week, that’s for sure.  I did my 21 miler on Friday night, after the sun went down, and it wasn’t too bad.  Plus I felt pretty awesome most of the time.  This could be attributed to the fact that I had a full day of meals and calories to work off of, or because I went super slow.  By Super slow I mean like 8:20s which is like 35 seconds off my goal pace, and totally recommended by every running coach/book ever.  So I will try not to beat myself up over running slower than normal.  I was running smarter, right?

I took a rest day on Saturday and then hit the roads again for 10 on Sunday, 8 on Monday, and 7 on Tuesday.  Today was a much needed rest day.  I slept in until 7:10!  Ridiculous.  Actually I woke up at 6:15, fed the dogs and then collapsed on the couch until 7:10.  Good thing my internal alarm was working today.

I have been biking to work almost every day for 3 weeks now.  Impressive right?  Well I live a half mile from work and ride my Schwinn Stingray.  Takes me about 4 minutes, which I now realize is awfully slow for being on a bike, and it still makes me feel like puking when I get there.  I probably look like a dork riding a little bike.  In fact, I know I look like a dork because someone yelled that out their car window.  At least I haven’t been slushied yet, which apparently is a thing now thanks to that awful TV show Glee.

Two weeks ago there was a 4 mile race that started across the street from my house.  Like literally, across the street from my house and in an alley by the school.  I didn’t do it.  Why?  Because I am a wiener.  I hate racing.  Why do I bother doing speedwork if I am not going to race?  Probably because I have plateaued, especially in short distances.  Good thing there about 50 5ks in the area this fall, only 2 10ks, and one half marathon/marathon.  I am trying to narrow down my options and pick a few of the dreaded 5ks, one of the 10ks, and, of course, the marathon.  There is a 5 mile race on Labor Day, but if it’s hotter than balls, count me out.  The next week is a 5k that starts about 3 blocks from my house so I will have to suck it up and race.

I did not have a good run today.  Pace wise, sure, 8 miles at 7:50 and 2 at 7:30, not bad.  I felt like crap.  So I need to consider why my hammys felt tight and I felt like a slug.  

2 weeks ago I did my first 20 miler.  It was surprisingly good.  After 18 I stopped and grabbed Henry and he ran the last 2 with me.  The first 18 were just under 8 min/mile.  Pace for the last two miles was about 9:30 because of all the stopping and starting, but it was good to get more time on my feet.  

The next week I took time off of work and had tons of fun with Red everyday.  I also made sure to get in lots of miles and did my 2nd 20 miler on Thursday, just 5 days after my first.  Not the best timing, but I was busy that weekend.  This 20 miler was not as easy.  I struggled.  I was just tired.  I wasn’t dehydrated, I did get hungry near the end.  I don’t eat before long runs so that’s a given.  My overall pace was somewhere around 8:07 min/mile.  

Then I got sick.  Woke up Saturday with a sore throat so I skipped my speed workout.  I could feel a sinus infection coming on so I ran an easy 5 that night before it got worse.  Totally logical, right?  Of course Sunday was hellish and I slept or lazed around most of the day.  Monday was still rough but I was able to get on the treadmill for 3 miles.  I decided if I couldn’t run long, then I was going to run fast.  So I ran 5k in 21 min.  

I decided short and fast would be my goal for the week while my head and chest recovered.  Not easy when your chest is congested.  duh.  I ran 4 miles on Tuesday and 5 on Wednesday averaging around 6:50 min/mile for both.  Thursday I had 6 on tap and I wanted to be sub 7.  I just could not do it.   all at once anyway.  I kept stopping the treadmill and taking long breaks.  But I did finish 6 miles in 41:30 though in reality it took me about an hour to finish with all my breaks.  Planned on doing 7 on Friday but just could not wake up.  so I didn’t.  I went back to bed and had awful nightmares.

So today, Saturday, I had 10.  I figured the rest on Friday would do me good but it didn’t.  I just ran too fast this week I suppose.  Plus I did some kettle bell moves on Tuesday and my legs are still sore.  I dont think thats supposed to happen.  hmm.  So I started my 10 miler at 5:30.  Had to make a pit stop for bathroom services after 3.7 miles.  Then Red was already up for some crazy reason.  RKY told me to keep running cause he was already awake.  So I went back out and really struggled.  Stiff legs.  I got back to the house after 8 miles were done and quick ran to the treadmill and hopped on.  I am trying to minimize my breaks in between outdoor and treadmill running.  I struggled again to finish the last 2 miles, though I was going a decent pace.  I hope I can recover for my 12 miler and 20 miler this week.  My head still feels off and I felt like puking in the shower.  Always a good way to start the day.
